Ganglia - masses of nerve tissue or groups of nerve cells.

Gastrointestinal reflux - also known as GERD; occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly and stomach contents leak back, or reflux, into the esophagus.

GBS - group B strep; can be passed from mother to baby during delivery; group B strep infection in the newborn is a serious and potentially life- threatening event.

Genotype - describes the genetic constitution of an individual, that is the specific allelic makeup of an individual, usually with reference to a specific character under consideration.

Germinal matrix - a highly cellular and highly vascularized region in the brain from which cells migrate out during brain development. The source of both neurons and glial cells and is most active between 8 and 28 weeks gestation. It is a fragile portion of the brain that may be damaged leading to an intracranial hemorrhage known as a germinal matrix hemorrhage.

Glial cells - also known as neuroglia or simply glia (Greek for "glue"); non-neuronal cells that provide support and nutrition, maintain homeostasis, form myelin, and participate in signal transmission in the nervous system.

Glomerulosclerosis - a hardening of the glomerulus in the kidney.

Glomerulus - in the kidney, a tiny ball-shaped structure composed of capillary blood vessels actively involved in the filtration of the blood to form urine.

Gonadal dysgenesis - refers to a condition where gonadal development is abnormal, often only presenting streaks of connective tissue: so-called streak gonads.

Gonadoblastoma - a rare, primary tumor of testicle or ovary containing, besides interstitial cells, germ cells, epithelial cells and granulosa cells.

Gore-Tex - a versatile proprietary synthetic composed of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, which is biologically similar to fascia and used for abdominal and thoracic wall, pediatric and diaphragmatic reconstructions, rectal, vaginal and urethral suspension, hernia repair, fascial defects.

Grams - measurement of weight; 1 pound=454 grams.
